Globalization and proliferation of multi-national companies, joint ventures, strategic alliances and business partnerships followed the earlier practices of "Just-In-Time", "Lean Management" and "Agile Manufacturing" neccessiated the development of supply chain networks and their management.

Further enabled by Technological changes, particularly the dramatic fall in information technology costs, a important component of transaction costs.
