This, coupled with a highly skilled and accomplished team of over 60 faculty enables us to propel students to greater heights. The department fulfils the need of around 850 undergraduate students, 150 postgraduate students, full-time and part-time research scholars.

We have well-equipped, advanced laboratories like TIFAC-CORE Product Development Centre, Festo-PSG Training Centre for Pneumatic Automation, DST-FIST Noise and Vibration Laboratory, RANE -Centre of Manufacturing Excellence etc., which are established in alliance with government agencies and pioneering industries. We also maintain a close liaison with a large number of Universities, industries within and outside the country, through collaborations and research projects.

In alignment with the vision of PSG, the department also fosters creative thought process and provides opportunities to our students to think out of box in order to mould world class professionals, capable of contributing to the welfare of the society.

Dr.Thyla P R. , Professor & Head

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established with an undergraduate (UG) programme in Mechanical Engineering in the year 1951. Subsequently, Masters degree programmes in Engineering Design, Industrial Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Energy Engineering, and Lean Manufacturing were introduced during the years 1962, 1978, 1991, 1999 and 2007 respectively. Bearing in mind the requirements of industry, the unique Sandwich UG programme was commenced in the year 1983.
The department is approved for carrying out research leading to Ph.D. and MS (by research) degrees (Full time and Part time) affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The department also offers full time Ph.D. and M.E. programmes under Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of AICTE, for the faculty members of various engineering colleges and engineers working in government organizations in the country.
The department is well-equipped with advanced laboratories like TIFAC-CORE Product Development Centre, Festo-PSG Training Centre for Pneumatic Automation, Engineering Design Centre, Machine Tool Research Centre, Wind Tunnel Centre, Industry 4.0 etc. The department maintains a close liaison with a large number of universities and industries within and outside the country, through strategic collaborations and research projects. The department offers consultancy in design, manufacturing and testing of a range of products as per BIS specifications. Since inception, thrust has been given to practical, industry oriented research and development. Altogether, this ensured a comprehensive and continuous interaction with industry. In recognition of this facet, the department was awarded the AICTE-CII award for the Best Industry-Linked College in Mechanical Engineering in the year 2012.
The B.E. Mechanical programme (4 years), commenced in the year 1951, is one of the sought after undergraduate programmes by the student community of Tamil Nadu. With a right blend of theory and practice in basics such as mechanics, design of machines, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, advancements in CAD/CAM, finite element analysis, thermal engineering and pneumatics and low cost automation, this programme has entrenched itself as a foremost option for students. The B.E. Mechanical Sandwich programme (5 years) established in the year 1983, is the only one of its kind in India. The objective of this programme is to mould students having the theoretical background of an engineer with extensive exposure to the industrial environment. The five year in-plant training includes visits to different industries, orientation towards industrial practices, and a comprehensive executive skill development.
The M.E. Engineering Design programme, started in the year 1962, emphasizes on Design and Analysis of Mechanical Systems, Mechanisms and Robot Kinematics, Vibration Engineering, Finite element analysis of systems, Applied Elasticity and Plasticity, Composite structures and Failure analysis. The M.E. Engineering Design programme is accredited by NBA for 5 years from 2017. The M.E- Industrial Engineering programme, started in the year 1978, emphasizes on Operations management, Supply chain management, Total quality management, Lean manufacturing, Manufacturing simulation, etc. The aforementioned aspects envision to mould post graduate engineers into field experts who can redesign manufacturing systems with higher productivity and quality. The M.E. (Industrial Engineering) programme is also offered in the part time mode to facilitate practicing engineers in and around Coimbatore to enrich their knowledge.
The M.E. Computer Integrated Manufacturing programme, started in the year 1991, emphasizes on the use of computers to aid the design and manufacturing activities in manufacturing industries. Other aspects covered in this programme include CAD/CAM interface, CNC programming, Rapid prototyping, and Simulation of Manufacturing systems.
The M.E. Energy Engineering programme, started in 1999, is offered to the graduate students in order to make them competent to undertake energy related activities. The major areas in which the programme concentrates are Energy audit, Environmental engineering, Renewable energy sources and systems, Energy management information systems, Industrial energy conservation and management and CFD analysis for energy efficient system design.
The M.E. Lean Manufacturing established in 2006 aims to enhance the traditional engineering skills with lean methodology and analysis techniques. It also provides the students with management skills to complement their technical ability by enabling the student to take a broader perspective on manufacturing industry as a whole and at the detailed level of the manufacturing operations.
The National Board of Accreditation has twice accredited various courses in the department with grade ‘A’ for three years in the year 2001 and for three more years in the year 2006. The UG Mechanical Engineering program has been accredited with effect from 01.07.2014 onwards.
