Yahoo and PSG Tech sign research agreement Photos

PSG College of Technology, one of the pioneers in engineering education in the country and Yahoo, a popular software development company, has entered into a research agreement on the areas of Grid and Cloud Computing. PSG and Yahoo have collaborated on this agreement since 2007. Three research agreements have been signed in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 between Prof. R. Rudramoorthy, Principal, PSG Tech and Chidambaran Kollengode, Director, Grid Systems Group, Yahoo Software Development India Pvt Ltd. A hardware agreement to supply 50 rack servers to PSG was signed between PSG and Yahoo in January, 2010 Coordinators of the research agreement are Dr. S. N. Sivanandam, Dr. G. Sudha Sadasivam, Dept. of CSE and Chidambaran Kollengode, Director, Grid Systems Group, Yahoo Software Development India.

They will jointly monitor the progress of the collaborative research work. The primary focus of this research work is to train staff and students on the Yahoo tools and platforms and to promote collaborative research work between the two organizations.

The research areas identified include Semantic based categorization and Web Search, Sequence alignment in bioinformatics using Hadoop, virtualization in grid systems, improvements in Hadoop security features, scheduling and block placement strategies, setting up a cloud environment and Service Oriented Computing.

A dedicated research group comprising of staff and post graduate students from PSG Tech is planned to be set up to foster PSG-Yahoo research collaborations. Some of the deliverables of the proposed research agreement include carrying out research projects in areas of grid and cloud computing, publishing the outcome of the research work in reputed international journals and conferences, encouraging post graduate students to actively participate in Hadoop Open source forum, evangelizing Hadoop by conducting faculty and student development programmes in the areas of grid and cloud computing.
